What's Up? - NOVEMBER 2024

Chris Baker

Each month I highlight a few objects you can spot in the night sky without the need for optical equipment.

Venus, Saturn, Mars and Jupiter all put on a fine display this month!

PLANETS

Mercury is difficult to spot this month

Mars

Mars will be residing in the constellation of Cancer this month. The planet rises in the late evening and can be seen in the south east - best toward midnight. It only gets to about 30 degrees so relatively low in the sky. You'll be able to see its red colour making it easier to identify.

Jupiter

Jupiter is super bright this month and easy to spot. It shines all month in the constellation of Taurus and by mid November it rises early evening in the south eastern sky. You'll be able to view Mars and Jupiter in the same direction. If you have binoculars then see how many of the four large moons you can spot.

Saturn

Saturn is visible all month early evening in the south. If you have binoculars it is worth observing as you'll get a glimpse of the rings.
